CBD stands for Cannabidiol and it is one of the two most well-known active compounds found in hemp and cannabis, the other of course being THC. The CBD oil which is used to make our products comes from hemp, which under the Federal 2018 Farm Bill must be under .3% THC. All products from CBD by Design are well below this limit, see our testing results here. Hemp is now federally legal in all 50 states and is the most common source for CBD products currently. Cannabidiol is generally considered non-psychoactive; however, it has been shown to reduce anxiety and stress in some users without the high and other negative side effects that come with using THC.
Cannabidiol generally expresses different effects for different people but some of the most common are:
Anxiety relief –
Multiple studies have found CBD to reduce stress, improve symptoms for PTSD, and to help induce sleep in cases of insomnia.
Currently researchers are exploring the effectiveness of CBD as it pertains to neurological diseases which can cause nerves and the brain itself to deteriorate. The receptor in play is called the CB1, which is one of the places CBD molecules attach themselves. These researchers are conducting studies to see if they have a positive effect on preventing and treating Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and strokes.
Pain relief –
The effects of CBD on your CB1 receptor may also help you manage pain. CBD has had success in treating some kinds of arthritis, chronic pain, muscle aches and even spinal cord injuries. These studies are ongoing.
One place where CBD has been found most effective is treating and preventing seizures. Studies on epilepsy patients are being conducted to determine how much CBD should be ordered to treat this condition as well as side effects. One study found it was effective in reducing seizures in 36.5% of their participants, however 12% of them experienced minor adverse effects. Which we would expect if you asked them, were significantly less uncomfortable than having a seizure.
Reduction of Inflammation/Anti-Acne –
CBD has been shown to influence your immune receptors to reduce inflammation. One study showed CBD oil suppressed excessive activity in the sebaceous glands, a glad that produces sebum which hydrates the skin. Too much sebum can cause acne, and CBD can help regulate its production.
Cancer Treatment –
Research is still in its early stages, but many studies are now investigating the role of CBD in preventing cancer cell growth. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) says that CBD may help alleviate cancer symptoms and cancer treatment side effects, mainly as they apply to radiation sickness. CBD’s ability to help moderate inflammation and change how cells reproduce is why it’s being considered as a treatment for this, yet as stated these studies are still in progress.
First and foremost, we recommend consulting your doctor before adding anything to your regimen that is designed to affect your health. One concern some people have, including the FDA, is that some products you can find online and in retail stores are unregulated and untested. They also might contain less CBD than advertised and/or contain harmful biproducts such as toxic metals, pesticides, or elevated levels of THC. Therefore, CBD by Design 3rd party tests all its products and those certifications can be requested through our contact page . In its pure form as it was intended, it has not been shown to be habit forming and in general has no adverse side effects.
After unscrewing the cap from your oil tincture, place it on a flat surface and then remove the cap from the flavor bottle. From there simply draw the flavored oil concentrate into the dropper by squeezing the rubber bulb, then carefully start by placing 1 or 2 drops into your oil tincture. Replace both caps and then shake up your tincture for approximately 10 seconds to allow the flavor to fully set it, then sample your creation. From there if you feel more flavor is required simply repeat these steps until you reach your desired level of flavoring. Enjoy!
A typical guideline for daily dosage is 0.25mg of CBD per pound of body weight for a regular dose, and up to 0.5mg of CBD per pound of body weight for a strong dose.
When figuring out how to calculate the dosage, you’ll need to consider the potency of your oil (i.e., how many mg in a ml) and use that to determine the ml size of the dose to administer.
As an example, a 45 pound dog that needs CBD for general well-being may start with a conservative dosage of 10-12mg. Using an 840mg bottle, which has 28mg of CBD per 1ml dropper-full, you would give slightly less than a half dropper to your pup for their daily dose of 10-12mg.
Some common methods for giving your pet their daily dose of CBD include dropping the oil on their food, dropping the oil on treats or a piece of bread, squirting directly into their mouth with the dropper.
